Mount Rinjani, Lombok's famous volcano, soar 3726 m above sea level and is the second highest volcano in Indonesia, attracting thousands of trekkers and climbers anually. The huge crater near the top contains a beatiful lake, Danau Segara Anak( child of the sea lake) and smaller volcanic cone, Gunung Baru Jari, which was formed a couple of hundred year ago. There are number of caves, small waterfals and hot springs located around the volacano
In 2004 Mount Rinjani won the world legacy Award and the volcano is recognised internationally as an important eco-tourism destination. Two, three and four day treks on the volcano are offered for the real adventure on Lombok.
Mount Rinjani forms the second highest volcanic peak in Indonesia, part of celebrated” Ring of Fire”. The dramatic landscape has been created over millions of years of cone-building, violent explosions and erosion. Forested slopes rising directly from the sea create their own weather pattern and act as water-collectors for the whole of Lombok. For the people of Lombok, Sasak and Balinese alike, the volcano is revered as a sacred place and abode of deities. Segara Anak is the destination of thousands of pilgrims who place offering in the water and bathe away disease in the hot springs. The endemic duck belibis is found here and several species of fish are recorded. Mt. Rinjani, one of the over 40 National Parks throughout Indonesia, was established in 1997.
During early morning and evening walks in Senaru you are likely to see interesting birds, butterflies, and at least one of two species of monkey who live in the surrounding Forest.
Rinjani Still Erupting But Climbers Permitted
Mount Rinjani continues to erupt but authorities have opened the montain to climbers strictly limited condition. People wishing to climb Rinjani and to witness the eruptions are permitted to trek to the shoulder of the montain, but are not allowed to make climb down to the crater lake or a attempt the treacherous climb to the summit. Mor many trekkers camp overnight on the mountain at present.
Climber ascending the mountain from Sembalun on the eastern getaway are only permitted to reach Plawangan II (Sembalun Crater Rim Camp) at 2639 metres. Climbers leaving from Senaru, the north getaway are only permitted to reach Plawangan I (Senaru Crater Rim) at 2641 metres.
